FOR LIGHTING PROFESSIONALS AT EVERY EXPERIENCE LEVEL01 / 05

01 / THE SHIFT

Installation is a skill.
Design is a way of seeing.

Lighting Design Awareness gives professionals at every experience level a foundation in visual composition. Learn to study a landscape in daylight, understand how it changes at night and make deliberate choices with light and shadow. Even seasoned designers can find new ways to strengthen their design judgment.

02 / WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

The language behind
lasting work.

Work through Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Pattern & Rhythm, Movement and Unity one principle at a time. Study how each shapes a design, identify common flaws in landscape lighting and develop more relevant solutions for the spaces you light.

01

Balance

Give every scene visual stability.

02

Contrast

Use difference to give light meaning.

03

Emphasis

Decide what the eye should notice first.

04

Pattern & rhythm

Create a deliberate visual pace.

05

Movement

Guide the viewer through the space.

06

Unity

Bring the entire composition together.

BEYOND FIXTURE PLACEMENT

Learn to create an experience, not simply an installation.

The strongest work is intentional. It considers what a client sees, how a space feels and why each design choice belongs there.

03 / HOW IT WORKS

Independent pace.
Personal guidance.

Learn through recorded classes on your schedule. After each class, meet one-to-one with Mark Carlson on Zoom for a 30- to 60-minute review of the concepts and your understanding. Schedule those conversations at times that work for you.

01

Watch when it works for you

Move through the lessons at a pace that fits your work and life.

02

Study the decisions behind the design

Connect each compositional principle to what you encounter in the field.

03

Review it with Mark

After each class, discuss the concepts and your questions in a personal Zoom session.

04 / FROM THE FIELD

For people serious
about their craft.

“Mark’s lighting design course has been excellent. I have taken part in a number of lighting programs over the years and what stands out about this course is the depth of the information and the way Mark connects the principles of lighting design to what we actually experience in the field. I genuinely look forward to every session and each new video because there is always something valuable I can take away and apply to my own designs.”

For a lighting designer who is truly looking to reach a higher level, this is the course I would recommend. It provides a clear pathway toward creating more thoughtful, intentional and successful lighting designs. The principles Mark teaches give you a stronger understanding of why a design works not simply where to place a fixture. When those principles are put into practice, the result is a better design, a better installation and ultimately a phenomenal experience for the client.

Personally, this course has been another important step in my journey to become the very best lighting designer I can be. Even after many years in this industry, I believe there is always another level to reach and Mark’s course has been the perfect step forward for me. It has challenged the way I look at properties, reinforced some of the things I already believed about great lighting and introduced principles that I know I will continue to reference throughout the rest of my lighting design career.

As far as value, I believe education like this is worth a significant investment. Depending on how the course is structured and delivered, I would personally consider $1,500 to $1,999 a very reasonable price for the level of knowledge, experience and long-term value this training provides. Great lighting design is a journey and Mark’s course has unquestionably helped me move further along that path.

“I attended the Lighting Design Awareness course in 2022. It was taught by Mark Carlson and included several advisors of the ELLI education team. It has given me the ability to see landscaping in a much better way. The way in which I would approach a design is completely different from what I have learned in this training. I have connected better with customers by offering them unique ideas and amazing atmospheres. The steps of composition have been a game changer for my lighting designs.”

I have had other training courses before, but I have never had formal training like this. Knowing that there are experienced lighting designers that want to share their experience, knowledge and passion for this craft has changed my perspective that we are setting a true standard of design in the low voltage lighting industry.

This education is important to the lighting craft because it separates you from being a light installer into a true lighting designer and an artisan of light. Most fixture peddlers out there have no idea how to develop an actual lighting design. It takes an overall passion for this craft as well as proper composition.

The presentations kept my attention and I learned a lot. I like the visuals and explanations and I truly enjoyed each session. The subject matter is exactly what is needed for designers. It was informational and had great content.
